Inversion Tower
Selecting a Location for your Spray Advisory System
There are various factors that need to be considered when choosing a location for your Spray Advisory System. This article is written to help you choose the right location.
To get the most accurate reporting out of your Spray Advisory System, there are several factors to consider. These are:
Ability to Correctly Install the Inversion Pole
The INCYT inversion tower consists of a ~3m ground sleeve plus a telescoping 10m pole. The ground sleeve must be installed 1.1m deep into the ground to ensure correct fixing point for the pole. The inversion pole itself telescopes and is winched up and down from a laid-flat position, requiring an unobstructed area 12m in front of the open channel of the ground sleeve. Ideally the ground sleeve is installed with the side of the ground sleeve labeled “FACE NORTH” facing to the north. This means the cleared area for the tower will need to be 12m directly to the south. This is particularly important for cases when the base station with its solar panel will also be installed on the 10m tower, as the solar panel must face north for optimum solar capture. The inversion pole will be 10m tall when installed. If a base station is co-located on the pole the full height with base station antennas will be 11.5m tall.
It is important to alert your aerial spray contractor as well as neighbours of your intention to install the inversion tower, and provide the gps coordinates of where the tower is along with its total height. INCYT recommends using high-vis tape to mark the top section of the pole, but we encourage you to consult with your spray contractor of how to ensure the tower is well-marked for their safety.
Wireless Network Connectivity
As the sensors are connecting via INCYT’s proprietary XR network, it’s good practise to ensure the sensors are installed in a position to receive good network signal for reliable reporting. So, avoid low lying areas or dips and areas where there is dense vegetation between the device and the Base Station.
Distance from Spraying Activities
Inversion events are quite localised, so it’s important the poles are installed in a location that is central to spraying activities. Where there are multiple properties you need will need to select a single farm to monitor, unless you have purchased multiple solutions.
Land Profile
Inversions generally are more frequent at lower lying areas, and less frequent at the top of hills or rises. As such, it’s important that the inversion pole and weather station is installed in a position between the two extremes (high and low land profiles) to ensure data reported is a fair representation of potential inversion conditions.
Artificial Influences
Avoid areas that artificially impact wind and temperature such as sheds or other man-made structures.
Viewing Your Data on the INCYT Platform
After the installation is complete a member of our team will schedule a session with you to walk through the INCYT platform. During this session they will show you how to interpret the data as well as setup notifications and alerts.
It is critical to enter the spray parameters for each spray session in the Spray Advisory Application on the INCYT app. Learn more about setting up spray reports here. ( Maverick Spray Reports )
